Mapos worked closely with the HSS Wellness Team to develop a program that strategically addressed a diversity of wellness needs for the hospital staff, from a gym and locker facilities, to cutting-edge treatment and recovery services focused on resiliency, enhancing staff well-being, and optimizing professional performance. The design concept – a counterpoint to the sterile and brightly lit hospital environment – was achieved through strategic use of color and subtle lighting that promotes a sense of calm energy as one passes through the layers of space and program.

In regards to the project, Bryan T. Kelly, MD, MBA, President and CEO of HSS stated, “Our people are our greatest asset, and we must do everything we can to ensure they know just how valued they are. The HSS Wellness Center was created to show our staff the same exceptional compassion and care they give to our patients every day.”

The overall design concept is an intentional counterpoint to the typical sterile and brightly lit hospital environment. This concept was achieved through strategic use of color and lighting throughout the center, setting the tone for this new space as a non-clinical, relaxing environment, while adjusting light and color to specific activities within each programmatic zone.

Penetrating through these spaces is a natural cork ribbon, acting as a figurative handrail that guests can follow from the entrance through to the far reaches of the facility. This ribbon was conceived as both the primary wayfinding device, literally holding the program signage, as well as serving as an acoustic buffer, softening voices and conversations throughout the space.
