Mapos was selected by iStar Financial to create its first “Sprint” project, an architectural pop-up intended to generate marketing momentum and sales for its “Marathon” project: the complete redevelopment of 33-acres of derelict Asbury Park waterfront.

The core concept of the project was that of a temporary and demountable amenities-focused beach club, which would drive visitors to, and through, an existing sales trailer focused on the future residential development. The amenities were targeted towards the ever-increasing summer population visiting the surrounding beaches, and included restrooms, showers, changing facilities, lockers, chair and umbrella rentals, hammocks, and shaded areas.

These architectural interventions took on the primary form of an elevated Longhouse nestled in a sea of sand and palm trees, along with iconic tower kiosks inspired by the tent-like porches of summer cottages in the area. These amenity structures were strategically placed at key access points to the beaches, and became the new icons signaling the ambitious future of this emergent beach destination.

Mapos was hired to draw locals and visitors to the Asbury Park waterfront, offer amenities such as hammocks and changing facilities, and generate excitement for and share details of the long term development plan.

The installation was designed as a series of modular structures so they could be easily moved and stored at the end of the summer.
